About the Baladi Blues Ensemble

The Baladi Blues Ensemble plays the urban Egyptian dance music known as Baladi. Skilful accordion and saxophone improvisations, energised by powerful Egyptian rhythms give the Baladi Blues Ensemble its distinctive sound. Their music reflects the sophisticated and fast paced, urban lifestyle of 1950’s Cairo - all offered with a charming and enigmatic stage presence.

Leading the group is the renowned percussionist, dancer and record producer Guy Schalom, described as "one of the most interesting and versatile percussionists working in the UK today" (fROOTS).

In the Baladi Blues Ensemble, Guy unites three of Egypt’s most celebrated master musicians:  legendary quarter-tone accordionist Sheik Taha (Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Ahmed Adaweya, Fifi Abdou, and Tahia Cariocca), saxophonist Ahmed El Saidi (Ali Hassan Kuban, Shams Hussein, Salamat) and master percussionist Hassan Reevis (Abdel Halim Hafez, Ahmed Adaweya).  The band also features frame drum wizard Adam Warne.

The band has released three CDs to date.  Their debut, Baladi Blues, was described by fROOTS magazine as “Outstanding, fresh and compelling as well as technically superb”.

  • provide a regular magazine for its members including information on events and classes
  • liaise with existing teacher training facilities nationally and to support the training of teachers
  • set up special teaching and performance events with national and international guest teachers and performers
  • provide opportunities for women to meet and dance together

About Elspeth Swishandhips

Elspeth started belly dancing in 1997, and by 2000 she started taking classes with Lorna Gow.  Thanks to the confidence and opportunities Lorna gave her, she started performing more regularly and made dancing a bigger part of her life. She organizes events, especially events which give her students and others the chance to show what they've been working on, and, hopefully, build a positive, encouraging belly dance community in Scotland.  Read Elspeth's belly dancing blog
